Grand Bay Reserve offers a Heritage Trail bicycling adventure

BILOXI, Miss. – Start the new year off right and join the staff of the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources’ Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and experts from the Heritage Trails Partnership of the Mississippi Gulf Coast for a basic bicycle repair workshop and outing on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, from 9:30 a.m.-noon, where you will learn the ABC’s (Air, Brakes and Chains) of inspecting and repairing your bicycle, and then head out from the Grand Bay Coastal Resources Center in Jackson County for a casual, 4-mile (roundtrip) bike ride to the Bayou Heron Boat Launch.

Cycling enthusiasts of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate in the workshop and ride down Bayou Heron Road; a flat, paved roadway, with only a 7-foot change in elevation. The Grand Bay Coastal Resources Center is located at 6005 Bayou Heron Road near Moss Point, Miss.

A fee of $5 per person or $15 per family payable to the Heritage Trails Partnership is being charged to cover the cost of bicycle inspections and repairs for this event. The fee is payable in advance through the Partnership’s PayPal account, or at the door on event day. Bring your own bicycle or rent one in advance from the Partnership for an additional fee (also payable through PayPal.)

Be sure to bring a sack lunch or snack and a bottle of water. Remember, no matter if the weather is cold or hot, you need water and healthy snacks to give you enough power to pedal. Don’t forget your helmet!
