DMR Beneficial Use of Dredge Material Program Files Modification Request

BILOXI, Miss. – The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources' (DMR) Beneficial Use of Dredge Material Program has filed a modification request with the DMR requesting permission to amend a previously approved dredge permit to allow for deeper maintenance dredging. The project is located on Deer Island, Biloxi, Miss.

The applicant is currently authorized to maintenance dredge an area 1,000 feet in length and 60 feet in width from a depth of 2 feet below mean low water to a depth of 6 feet below mean low water, which will remove approximately 8,889 cubic yards of material from a canal adjacent to the Mississippi Sound. The currently authorized depth is too shallow for efficient transport of additional dredge material to Deer Island, so the applicant is requesting to modify the authorized depth to 9 feet below mean low water within the authorized footprint.

The modification would allow for an additional 6,667 cubic yards of material to be removed, bringing the total to 15,556 cubic yards of material to be removed from the project area.

The applicant is also requesting a maintenance dredging agreement so that the areas can be managed as needed over the next 10 years. Dredged material will be utilized for an approved beneficial use.

In compliance with the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, the applicant will request certification from the Office of Pollution Control that the above mentioned activity will be in compliance with the Act and appropriate requirements of the State Law.

Any person wishing to make comments or objections to the proposed regulated activity must submit those comments in writing to the Department of Marine Resources at 1141 Bayview Ave., Biloxi, MS 39530 and the Office of Pollution Control, P.O. Box 2261, Jackson, MS 39225 before 1 p.m. on Aug. 5, 2011.

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is dedicated to enhancing, protecting and conserving marine interests of the state by managing all marine life, public trust wetlands, adjacent uplands and waterfront areas to provide for the optimal commercial, recreational, educational and economic uses of these resources consistent with environmental concerns and social changes.
