More oyster reefs closing

BILOXI, Miss. – Officials with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources announced Friday that several more oyster reefs will be closed until further notice because of the stage of the Pearl River in Pearl River, La. 

The closure affects the following areas:

Area II "C" Conditionally Approved Waters and its subdivisions of II "E" (Square Handkerchief reef and southern portions of Henderson Point reef); II "F" (southern portions of the Pass Christian reef) and II "G" (northern portions of the Pass Marianne and Telegraph reefs).

This closure goes into effect at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7. 

Officials also announced that two areas will close to oyster harvesting at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, to conserve the resource:

Area 2 "H" and Area 2 "I" Approved Waters - This includes Pass Marianne, Telegraph, Buoy, Pelican and Umbrella reefs and First and Fletchers keys.

These orders are in accordance with the Mississippi Commission on Marine Resources Title 22, Part 1 and the "Order Opening the 2013-2014 Limited Mississippi Oyster Season in Certain Waters Classified as  Approved or Conditionally Approved by the Mississippi Commission on Marine Resources and Placing Certain Restrictions on Oyster Harvesting Activities."
