Red drum season to close June 13

BILOXI, Miss. – Red drum season will close at 12:01 a.m. Friday, officials with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources announced Tuesday.

The 50,000-pound quota for commercial red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) has been met, which is the reason for the closure.

The commercial season for red drum will reopen at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 1, 2015.

This order is under the authority of Mississippi Code Ann. 49-15-15 (1)(a) (2009) and through the authority granted to the executive director of the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources by the Mississippi Commission on Marine Resources.

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is dedicated to enhancing, protecting and conserving marine interests of the state by managing all marine life, public trust wetlands, adjacent uplands and waterfront areas to provide for the optimal commercial, recreational, educational and economic uses of these resources consistent with environmental concerns and social changes.
